PART I: GETTING TO KNOW HISTORY AND SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS

Week One (Aug 16 & 18): Course Introduction, Expectations, and WordPress / Introducing Zotero

Writing/ Assignment(s) to Complete This Week

  • Everyone: Post an Introductory Bio on your own portfolio website (using WordPress, Blogger, or other “blog posting-friendly” tools). Include photo (or media) of yourself, background information, and why you selected a secondary education social studies career tract.
    • Take time to think about the structure/design of your portfolio/blog website. Here is where you will post your weekly blogs and the various elements of your teaching portfolio. (Note: a website is a work in progress – no need to get it perfect right now).
    • Also, address this simple question: “Why did you enroll in this course, and how do you expect this course to meet your goals for becoming a history educator?”
    • Have your website online, with an Introductory post, by Sunday night August 21. Email your URL address to Prof. Sibaja
  • Everyone: Take time to establish your identity on Zotero.org, and then join the Issues in US History Group Library.
    • Explore meta-data-friendly search tools, like WorldCat or Amazon.
    • Add one new item to the group library, such as your favorite American History book.
      • Notice how Zotero populates the data for entries you select (or, how it may leave certain fields empty).
    • Finally, take time to further explore the various features of Zotero (especially the “gear” button).


Week Two (Aug 23 & 25): NC American History I & II Standards / Common Core & C3 Framework

Writing/ Assignment(s) to Complete This Week

  • Bloggers: Post your thoughts to the readings for Week Three (the reading selections we will discuss in class on Aug 30 & Sep 1).
    • Refer to the blog assignment-grading sheet when crafting posts and peer comments.
    • Also, check the course website for suggested topics to address, and for suggested questions to answer.
      • These topics & questions are “break in case of emergency” suggestions in case you are going through writer’s block. You can focus on something else.
    • Blog posts are due no later than Sunday Aug 28.
    • Peer comments (for 2-3 classmates- posts) are due by Monday Aug 29. [Your comments should address, further, or even dispute the points raised by your classmates]
      • Follow this pattern each week, with blog posts due no later than Sunday night and peer comments no later than Monday night.
  • Zotero curators: Provide at least one review to the readings of Week 3
    • Also, add TWO new entries dealing with the topic for next week (cognitive levels and state standards).
    • Reviews & new items are due no later than Sunday Aug. 28.
      • Follow this pattern each week, with reviews and new entries due no later than Sunday night.
  • CURRICULUM PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT: Begin developing your ideas on an American History I, or American History II, Curriculum Map (flow, structure, units, etc.)
    • First draft is due no later than Sep 14. (2 pts. of your final gradesee Grading section in the syllabus)


Week Three (Aug 30 & Sep 1): Cognitive Levels and How They Inform the Creation of Essential Standards & State Assessments

PART II: MAPPING THE CURRICULUM

Week Four (Sep 6 & 8): Curriculum Design, UbD, and Mapping

You can also address the potential and dangers of using Hollywood films in the US History classroom.


Week Five (Sep 13 & 15): Unit Planning & Summative Assessments

  • Bloggers: Post your thoughts to the readings for Week Six, with peer comments.
  • Zotero curators: Provide at least one review to the readings of Week 6, and add a new entry related to next week’s topic (lesson planning and assessments)
  • Begin developing your Unit & Lesson Plans with Formative and Summative Assessment Samples. Unit & Lesson Plans will be due no later than Tuesday Oct 20. Assessment Samples will be due no later than Thurssday Oct 29. All work is posted online to your website.
  • CURRICULUM PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT DUE THIS WEEK:  American History I, or American History II, Curriculum Map

Week Twelve (Nov 1 & 3): Individual Conferences this Week

  • Bloggers: Last week. Post your thoughts to the readings for Week Thirteen, with peer comments.
  • Zotero curators: Last week. Provide at least one review to the readings of Week 13, and add a new entry related to next week’s topic (becoming a professional history educator)
  • CURRICULUM PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT DUE THIS WEEK: Meet with Prof. Sibaja to go over your curriculum portfolio. Be prepared to discuss Draft #2 of your curriculum map – bring a copy of all materials, including your revised curriculum map (2 pts of your final grade)
    • Meeting times will be scheduled in class in October.
  • Revisit your Curriculum Project. How do you revise them to create a rich, student-centered environment?
  • CURRICULUM PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT: Begin preparing for your presentation: purchase a leather portfolio binder (or close to it), work on your resume, rehearse your 8-10 minute talk
    • Presentations begin Nov 15  – order will be determined this week or next


Week Thirteen (Nov 8 & 10): Professional Organizations, Professional Development / Building a Professional Portfolio, Resumes, and Going on the Job Market

Writing/ Assignment(s) to Complete This Week

  • CURRICULUM PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT: Continue preparing for your presentation: purchase a leather portfolio binder (or close to it), work on your resume, rehearse your 8-10 minute talk
  • Revised versions of all the portfolio elements should be posted on your website at least 3 days before you present, with a brief description for each item – users should understand what they are looking at.


PART V: Projects, Presentations, and Wrap-up

Week Fourteen (Nov 15 & 17): Final Presentations Begin (8-9 presentations this week)

    • Presentations (15 min. per student).
    • Revised versions of your portfolio assignment items posted online.

Final Exam Schedule: Reading day is on Thursday Dec 1; Exam on Tuesday Dec 6 (3:00-5:30 PM).

Please note: The last day to submit your digital portfolio is the last day of the semester (Nov 30).

Final exam essays are due no later than Dec 6,  emailed to the instructor at sibajaro@appstate.edu and a paper copy delivered in person to Prof. Sibaja’s office on Dec 6 before 5:30pm.
